If we had to pinpoint Syrasoft’s exact moment of conception, it becomes remarkably clear that the original company, Automation Technologies, began as simply a favor for a friend. It was 1991 and a storage facility owner named Charlie heard that an acquaintance of his, our founder Tom Garden, was good with computers and asked if Tom could help him out by writing a piece of software to keep track of the billing and whatnot involved in running the facility.
At the time, Tom was a successful executive at a well-known pet supply giant (rhymes with Martz) but, in an unusual twist, his free time was not otherwise spoken for by the ladies. That was it! A little dabbling at night here, a little coding on weekends there and Voila! Tom handed Charlie a disk containing his own custom-designed software and an industry star was born. Tom decided it was time to escape the unrelenting boredom and predictability of a regular paycheck and fought long and hard to finally gain his freedom from the stranglehold of corporate America. Not so easily done. (A funny story Tom likes to share after a few pints at the shows).
Eventually, people started talking, like they do. Word got out around the storage community. There were a few mentions in one or two trade publications. Tom decided to man a little booth at a trade show and hand out demo copies of his program, and forward momentum carried the little company that could into the uber successful industry leader known the world over as Syrasoft!
There were a lot of years and, let’s not kid ourselves, maybe even some tears between that inauspicious beginning and now. Mistakes were made and corrected, partnerships struck and regretted, hard work wasted and rewarded. In the end, the wisest thing Tom ever did was to build his own storage facility, effectively creating a test lab in which to work out the kinks and continue to upgrade our program.
Along the way, major changes took place in Tom’s little company. In 1998, it was one of the first self-storage management software solutions for the Windows operating system; in 1999, we introduced the ‘Bird’s Eye View’ screen which dramatically simplified access to information and set a new standard of operations; and in 2000, we underwent a thorough make-over and rebranding to emerge as the now iconic Syrasoft. Well, ok, not exactly the Phoenix rising from the ashes but it was a pretty big deal around here.
Speaking of ‘around here’, Syrasoft has expanded rapidly over the past few years, bringing on some great new team members, outgrowing our original offices and making several moves before settling into our current location in Baldwinsville, NY on the beautiful banks of the historic Erie Canal.
Lest you think we kicked back to rest on our laurels and bask in the accolades, in 2013, we released Version 9, featuring even more upgrades to benefit the management side of the industry. Vendors have found that they can run their facilities 24/7 with minimal staff, maximum profit and no drama. In fact, in many cases the facilities practically run themselves!
